I don't know how many days I have been given to spend, but I do feel my hands are getting empty. Taking stock silently, I find that more than eight thousand days have already slid away from me. Like a drop of water from the point of a needle disappearing into the ocean, my days are dripping into the stream of time, soundless, traceless. Already sweat is starting on my forehead, and tears welling up in my eyes.

大家都知道spit的意思是“唾液”。可奇怪的是，有一个和spit相关的词组spit and image的意思却是“和...一模一样的（人或东西）”。
语源学界普遍接受的一种说法是，spit and image起源于俗语“just as if one person were spit out of another's mouth.”，是一种关于“极其相似”的不雅比喻。
来看一个例句：He is his father's spit and image.（他和他爸爸长的特别相似。）
英语还有个俗语the very spit of，它的意思是“和……一模一样”。

英语里有一个俚语叫hair of the dog，表示an alcoholic drink taken to cure a hangover（解宿醉的一杯酒），这是为什么呢？
其实，这句俗语更完整的说法是“hair of the dog that bit you”，与过去的一种传说有关。据说古时候人们认为如果不小心被狗咬伤，只要从那条狗身上取下一些狗毛涂抹在伤口上，伤口就会很快痊愈。
这句话几经演变，后来逐渐被用来比喻“一个人酩酊大醉之后，隔天早上用来解宿醉的一杯酒”。其实这两种看似完全不同的含义存在一种类比关系：用狗毛来治疗被狗咬伤的伤口，与用一杯酒来治疗头天贪杯造成的不适，是否有异曲同工之妙呢？

我们知道eyetooth指人的“犬齿，上颚尖牙”。可是英国首相布莱尔在被问及如何看待英国对美国政府的大力支持时，却说过这样一句话：“I think most countries around the world would give their eyeteeth to have that relationship.”这是什么意思呢？
词组give one's eyeteeth for sth.在演讲中比较常见，表示“愿意用重大的牺牲或代价来换取……”。早在20世纪30年代，eyeteeth就出现在英国作家威廉·萨姆塞特·毛姆的小说《 寻欢作乐》（Cakes and Ale）中，表示“犬齿”。Eyeteeth的这一含义可以追溯到1580年，起因是犬齿离眼睛比较近，而且位于两眼的正下方。由于犬齿的神经系统离眼睛比较近，所以任何对犬齿的损伤都会造成强烈的痛楚。因此，自愿遭受失去犬齿的痛苦当然是一种“巨大的牺牲”，这就是to give one's eyeteeth for sth. 的来历了。
英语中还有类似的说法：to give one's eyes for sth.。
